The Suez Canal Authorities are opening the new canal / lane 6th of August 2015

30.07.2015

After only 12 months of digging the new canal is ready for all vessels up to 66 ft draft.

An impressing achievement by the whole of Egypt is ready to be presented to the users of the Suez Canal already 6th of August, exactly one year after the work was commenced. In this respect we expect SCA to announce some changes to the convoy system which should benefit the shipping industry adding more flexibilty to the Egyptian waterway.

Preliminary to the official announcements from SCA which we are expecting still within this week you should know that what we have picked up from our local sources (not confirmed yet!):

As of 6th of August 2015 the new arrival limit at either Suez or Port Said will be 2300hrs. Furthermore, the additional dues for arriving after the arrival limit has also been adjusted as flws:

a) Vessels arriving between 2300 and 2400hrs can join the convoy against a payment of a surcharge equal to 5% of the normal transit dues with a maximum of SDR 12500.

b) Vessels arriving after 2400hrs and up to 0100hrs can join the convoy against the payment of a surcharge equal to 10% of the normal transit dues with a maximum of SDR 25000.

c) Vessels arriving after 0100hrs may join the convoy, if traffic conditions permit, against the payment of a surcharge equal to 12% of the normal transit dues with a maximum of SDR 30000.

Furthermore, we expect one daily convoy each direction starting 0330hrs in Port Said and 0400hrs in Suez and last vessel to enter around 08-0830hrs. Transit time expected to be 10-12 hours as a ‘free run’ i.e. no stoppage inside the canal.
