Vessel Traffic Service:
Navigational services are offered by the Port Control Centre for a 24 hour period at all times. The VHF channel is monitored continuously (channel 12 being the working channel), while the 2 182 kHz frequency is monitored by the Bluff Signal Station only. Vessels must be sufficiently ballasted to permit safe navigation within the port.Pilotage:
The port is a compulsory pilotage area. Pilotage is compulsory in the port of Durban. The pilot rendezvous position is 3 nautical miles northeast of the entrance on the leading lights. Pilot ladders must comply with Solas regulations. All vessels with a freeboard in excess of 9.0m must have an accommodation ladder rigged in conjunction with the pilot ladder. Manropes must be provided.
Drydocking, floating docks, repair quays and workshops available. Vessels with a maximum beam of 33,5 can be accommodated.
Continuous 24 hour services including pilotage, berthing and tugs.

Cargo working hours:
Conventional quays: Mon-Fri: 0600-2200hrs; Sun: 0715-1515hrs
Multi-purpose terminal: 24hours working
Container terminal: 24 hours, 7 days a week
Fuel, diesel and gas are available either ex pipeline or from a bunker barge. No bunkers are supplied outside port.
Seven tugs are stationed at the port for assisting with docking and undocking. The tugs are owned and operated by Portnet. The tugs, Umhlali, Inyalazi, Nonoti and Umzumbe have a bollard pull of 33 tons; the Umvoti, Umsunduzi and Impunzi have a bollard pull of 38 tons. All tugs are maintained to South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) Class 8 standards. All seven tugs are equipped with radar, echo sounders, direction finders, radio telephone (SSB), VHF, fire-fighting and salvage equipment.

One diesel workboat with a bollard pull of 11.5 tons for miscellaneous work (soon to be replaced)
Four launches for line running and miscellaneous work.
Three cargo punts (1 of 140 tons, 2 of 300 tons) for transporting cargo and miscellaneous work.
