Sokhna Port - Other

In the Sokhna area, located along the Red Sea, the Egyptian government has allocated 9,000 ha of land for economic and industrial development. This area is referred to as the Suez Special Economic Zone (SSEZ). At present, the first phase of the SSEZ, 2,500 ha land use, is being developed. Industrial developments in the first phase comprise industries producing fertilizer, buses, sealant, aluminium, concrete paving blocks, tiles, steel concrete, paper, industrial gasses, polypropylene, ammonia, etc.

In the direct vicinity of this industrial development, in the 1,000 ha Sokhna Port and Logistics Centre will offer excellent deep-sea facilities for the handling of liquids and bulk cargo, containers, break bulk and general cargoes. The Port is located about 40 km south of Suez City and has an excellent location on the coast of the Gulf of Suez, with Cairo located some 130 km to the west. The new port of Sokhna will provide the necessary interface for import and export serving the Suez Special Economic Zone as well as the Red Sea and the Greater Cairo Region. Operations in the port started in 2001.

The objective for the new Sokhna Port and Logistics Centre is to become the major port south of the Suez Canal, serving the import and export needs of the SSEZ, the Greater Cairo Region and the region south of Suez along the Red Sea. In addition the port will play an important role for the transshipment of non-Egyptian cargoes destined for the Red Sea area, Arabian areas, Indian subcontinent, African subcontinent and East Mediterranean Sea
