As the maritime industry navigates new challenges, we’re here to keep you informed on the latest developments and updates. Featured This Month: L&N Intern VisitSkaw Passings Update BALTIC REGION SECURITY UPDATE BALTIC REGION SECURITY UPDATE Update from our analyst at Ambrey Skaw Passings Update : Sep 15- Oct 15 Source: Lloyds AIS, Observed Data Skaw passings Per Month Total Northbound Southbound Crude Tanker Product Tanker Dry Bulk Container / General Cargo Other Tankers Gas Carrier Monthly Moving Average 1587 1734 315 115 596 1638 433 220 Sep 15- Oct 15 3032 1500 1532 273 91693 1382 397 196 Commercial shipping in the Baltic Sea continued to operate as normal over the past month, with no attacks on merchant vessels, ports or energy infrastructure reported. Authorities across the region kept up a high level of maritime surveillance, while electronic interference with navigation systems persisted in some areas, particularly off Kaliningrad and in the Gulf of Finland. On 14 September, the Russian corvette Soobrazitelny fired two flares towards a Danish military helicopter on routine reconnaissance in international waters off Gedser. The incident was contained and had no impact on commercial traffic. Patrols continued to monitor Russian-linked vessels throughout the period, so ships carrying Russian cargo or subject to sanctions may see more inspections. On 1 October, Russian authorities held the Cyprus-flagged cargo vessel Västerbotten for around 11 hours during a transit from Sweden to Estonia through Russian waters. The vessel was released the same day. Estonian authorities now advise ships to avoid the Russian-water section of this corridor. On 12 October, Swedish authorities lifted the operating ban on the tanker Sea Owl 1 after confirming its flag registration. The case is a useful reminder that complete registration, certificates and manning documentation remain the best way to ensure smooth passage. Regional readiness was also strengthened through Finland’s MARSEC EU exercise on 15–17 September, which rehearsed vessel boardings and the protection of subsea infrastructure. On 12 October, the Swedish Maritime Administration issued a NAVTEX warning about GNSS, AIS, radar and DGPS disturbances in the Gulf of Finland, the Gulf of Riga, the Åland Sea and waters off Kaliningrad. Mariners are advised to stay alert and be ready to use non-GNSS navigation methods. Overall, the risk to commercial shipping remains low, and traffic through the Baltic and Danish Straits continues to flow. Ambrey continues to monitor developments closely. 3321 YOUR PREFERRED AGENT IN MARITIME HOTSPOTS Malta Panama Denmark Singapore Spain Gibraltar Egypt Turkey LETH NEWSLETTER Oct 2026 If you have questions about the statistics in this article or require further information, please reach out to our team at: [email protected] This month, our two new interns, Oliver and Therese, travelled to Skagen to visit L&N, the Skagen-based launch company we work closely with. The aim was to see first-hand how deliveries and crew changes are carried out in practice at one of the busiest maritime crossroads in Northern Europe. The trip also offered plenty of local character, from Skagen’s charm and cuisine to surprisingly fine weather for October in Denmark. Oliver and Therese are now back at our Copenhagen office with fresh perspectives to take forward as they develop as shipping agents in the Danish Straits. A Day at Sea with L&N in Skagen Oliver and Therese joined two trips aboard L&N’s supply barges, L&N Seaman and L&N Odin. The hands-on experience gave them valuable insight into the skill and precision needed to work alongside vessels passing Skaw, and an appreciation of how demanding these operations can become when the weather turns. At Leth Danish Straits, we place great value on our strong relationship with L&N and look forward to many more years of close cooperation. We also believe our team should understand how the operations they coordinate every day actually take place on the water. Seeing the work up close builds perspective and respect, and makes for smoother cooperation and better service for our customers. Some words from Oliver about the experience: "It’s been a great experience to see how our daily bookings, crew changes, and deliveries work in practice, and how weather conditions can affect operations." -Oliver Outrup, Operations Intern
