Expanding the Canal in strategic places will reduce the transit time for the southbound vessels
What we know now is, in short, that they by dry digging and widening of the existing canal, as described in the article, theoretically will have a ‘two way street’ at least in the middle part of the canal. By doing so, all vessels can transit the canal without stopping after the expansion.
As it is today, only the vessels transiting northbound have this privilege whereas the southbound vessels are waiting 4-6 hours until the northbound convoy has completed.
